NBC’s Saturday Night Live apparently thought it would be in good taste to joke about the two recent assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump as it launched its 50th season.
The segment in question featured Trump, as played by actor James Austin Johnson, addressing his Republican followers during a MAGA rally, urging them to “come on back because we’re having fun.”
He then said, “we love my rallies, except when somebody goes bing bing bing bong bing right at me… you know that happened because of the rhetoric of the radical left.”
“They say that me blaming the Democrats for inciting violence is the pot calling the kettle black, but frankly I didn’t know the kettle was black until very recently, I thought the kettle was Indian, but then it decided to turn black,” Johnson’s Trump said.
SNL kicked off its 50th season with a smattering of former co-stars, including Maya Rudolph as Vice President Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg as her husband Doug Emhoff and Dana Carvey as Joe Biden.
“We’ve got to stay focused. If we win, together, we can end the drama-la and the trauma-la and go relax in our pajama-las,” Rudolph, playing Harris, said at a mock rally in the show’s cold open.
The Trump War Room, however, didn’t find the segment so funny, blasting the macabre display by SNL as “disgusting.”
“There were two assassination attempts against President Trump within a span of seven weeks. @nbcsnl apparently finds that funny. Disgusting,” the account stated.
