Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has allegedly admitted to Brandon Judd, President of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), that the administration of President Joe Biden is releasing more than 85 percent of the illegal immigrants that have been apprehended in the United States.
The initial report from Bill Melugin of Fox News was confirmed on Jan. 8 by the official X, formerly Twitter, account of the NBPC.
Melugin reported that according to three Border Patrol sources who were in the room, “while meeting privately with agents in Eagle Pass, TX today, DHS Sec. Mayorkas admitted that the current release rate for migrants caught crossing the border illegally is ‘above 85 percent.’ I’m awaiting comment from DHS.”
The NBPC reposted Melugin’s post after giving unambiguous confirmation that the conversation did take place.
The official NBPC X account replied that Melugin’s sources are correct and that during this meeting, Judd told Mayorkas that “Americans have the right to know the facts about what’s going on at the border.”
At that point, Mayorkas admitted that “over 85 percent” of the people illegally crossing the U.S. border are being released instead. (Related: Texas DPS spokesperson states the obvious: There are criminal networks operating in America that are involved in human smuggling.)
According to a report, Mayorkas made this comment privately while meeting with Border Patrol agents in Eagle Pass, Texas. The agents asked him about his comments with Bret Baier on “Special Report,” addressing reports that over 70 percent of illegal immigrants are released.
Mayorkas allegedly answered that it would not surprise him at all because he knew the data. He added that “when individuals are released, they are released into immigration enforcement proceedings. They are on alternatives to detention.”
Mayorkas also told the Border Patrol agents that “a record number of individuals” have returned or been removed, claiming that they are “enforcing the laws that Congress has passed.” He also confirmed that the release rate was “above 85 percent.”
The report follows only days after it was announced that Mayorkas’ impeachment proceedings from the House Homeland Security Committee have begun in earnest.
The move comes as a direct contradiction to a statement given by Mayorkas to the press recently when he claimed that “the majority of all migrants encountered at the southwest border throughout this administration have been removed, returned or expelled. A majority of them.”
Mayorkas said the agency is doing everything it can, “within a broken system, to incentivize noncitizens to use lawful pathways, to impose consequences on those who do not, and to reduce irregular migration,” while using the latest soft-language euphemism for the criminal act of illegally entering America.
Biden administration claims it needs more funding and reform from Congress to address the migrant crisis
Republicans have blamed the historic migrant crisis, which saw 302,000 migrant encounters at the border in December alone on Biden-era policies, including the releases of migrants into the interior, a process dubbed “catch-and-release.” Additionally, they pointed to the broad use of parole, along with narrowed Immigration and Customs Enforcement enforcement and the stopping of wall construction.
The Biden administration claims that it is dealing with a hemisphere-wide crisis and that it requires “more funding and comprehensive immigration reform” from Congress. The administration also claimed that it is expanding “lawful migration pathways” and increasing consequences for illegal entry, but that it won’t be able to do enough because of a “broken” system.
Mayorkas and other DHS officials have claimed that it has removed or returned more than 470,000 people since May, which is more than in the entirety of FY 2019.
At a press availability, Mayorkas referenced the removals and returns, saying it is more than in any other five-month period in the last 10 years.
The White House has also requested $14 billion in border funding from Congress as part of its emergency supplemental spending proposal. However, this is being held up as Republicans demand more restrictions on the release of migrants into the interior.
Last week, Mayorkas said the broken system, not administration policy, was drawing migrants to the border.
On the other hand, the Biden administration announced a lawsuit against the state of Texas after Gov. Greg Abbott signed a law that allows state and local law enforcement to arrest illegal immigrants. According to the lawsuit, the law is unconstitutional and interferes with the federal government’s authority on immigration matters.
